“Jamie, it’s time for bed,” called Mommy.
“I’m busy!” said Jamie, and busy he was. Jumping from the sofa to the chair, to the table to the dog, Jamie was jump jump jumping.
“It’s time to put on your jammies,” said Mommy. “Oh Jamie, what a mess!”
“I don’t want jammies,” Jamie complained.
“Not even jumping jammies?” asked Mommy. She held something behind her back.
Jamie stopped jumping. “What kind are those?” he asked.
“They jump,” said Mommy, holding up bright blue pajamas. “But you want to be careful with them,” Mommy warned.
“Jumping jammies! Jumping jammies!” cried Jamie.
“Well, alright,” said Mommy, helping Jamie into the bright blue jumping jammies.
Jamie stood a moment in his new blue jumping jammies. Nothing happened.
“They’re not jumping jamm-woah!” he said as the jammies suddenly jumped to the chair.
“Jamie,” scolded Mommy.
“It’s not me, Mommy, it’s the jammies,” called Jamie as he jumped to the table.
He jumped, and jumped some more, around the house, off the walls, bouncing right out the door. Jamie and his jumping jammies jumped over a tree. Over a building. Over a bridge! Over the moon he jumped, and from star to star. Mars and Venus, too. Jamie jumped, and jumped, until he realized, he was kind of sleepy.
But he couldn’t stop jumping!
He jumped over Jupiter, and from Neptune to Uranus to Pluto, which used to be a planet.
“Mommy?” he called.
Out beyond our solar system he jumped, bouncing between asteroids and into cold, boring space.
“Mommy!” he cried. “Mommmmmmmmyyyyyyyyyy!”
“I’m here,” said Mommy, and she was.
Mommy had a jet pack.
“How about these jammies?” she offered, holding up Jamie’s boring old yellow jammies. “I hear they’re snuggly, and they make you sleep,” she said.
Jamie nodded and snuggled in tight when Mommy wrapped her warm arms around him. “I can carry you home,” she said, helping Jamie into the sleepy pajamas. Jamie nodded again, resting his head against her shoulder.
“Did you have fun with the jumping jammies?” she asked, but Jamie was already fast asleep.
